A two-class series being offered at the Brighton Small Business Assistance Center
October 5, 2010---Brighton, CO: Brighton Economic Development Corporation is pleased to announce a two-class series being offered through the Brighton Small Business Assistance Center. Symmetry Consulting, a Denver-based HR consulting firm, will be leading the classes on October 7, 2010 and October 14, 2010, targeting small business owners who do not yet have an in-house human resource team. The classes, called “HR 101 for Small Businesses” are split over two weeks and only cost $10 per class for BEDC Investors, Chamber Members and SBAC Clients. For anyone else interested in attending the cost is $20 per class. Both prices include a box lunch.
“The Small Business Assistance Center strives to bring seminars such as Everything A Small Business Owner Needs To Know About HR in an effort to meet the needs of our small business community in Brighton”, said Raymond H. Gonzales, President & CEO, Brighton Economic Development Corporation.
"The first class will teach small business owners how to write effective job descriptions; where to post job openings and find potential employees at little or no cost; what paperwork the state and federal government requires," said St-Pierre. "The second will describe the ins and outs of drug testing, what to do if an employee has a medical marijuana card, employee performance plans and how to handle--and sometimes terminate--a difficult or underperforming employee.”

Getting ready to hire an employee? Before a small business does, they should join the Brighton SBAC and Symmetry Consulting for an informative class on how to do it so that you hire the right person for their business. In the class we will start with basics of writing a job description, figuring out a competitive salary, where to look for that rockstar and how to effectively interview the candidate and determine the good, bad and the ugly before they start and how to best extend the offer so that the candidate becomes their employee.
By taking this class, attendees will be able to:

· How to conduct a phone screen interview
· How to conduct an in-person interview
· How to determine who the right fit is for your business
· How to expertly extend an offer

Part 2: October 14, 2010 from 11:00 am-1:00 pm at the Brighton Learning & Resource Campus located at 1850 Egbert Street in Brighton, CO
Now that the business has their dream employee, what are the next steps? Our second class in the series will teach what to do after the offer is extend. We will go through the basics of the background check and if the business should do drug testing. It will also walk through how to manage employees – even the difficult ones, employee recognition and how to best protect the business owner and the business when they terminate an employee.
By taking this class, they will be able to:
* The importance of background checks
* To drug test or not and how Medical Marijuana plays a role
* The hire paperwork – what you need to have the employee fill out to remain compliant with all state and federal laws.
* Good Employee maintenance
* How to deal with difficult employees
* Employee recognition programs
* To do or not to do performance evaluations
* How to legally maintain your employee files
* The legal and humane ways to terminating employees
* Performing exit interviews
